Once Around on a Bicycle
I was fortunate to pass the famous 47 Arm Cactus of Quartzite, AZ. Oddly enough, I was the only tourist visiting the arboreal wonder this day. I must have arrived between tour buses.
As you leave the town of Hope, AZ you see this sign saying "You're Now Beyond Hope". The seven residents of Hope obviously have a great sense of humor.
Traveling by bicycle through Phoenix is made easy by this bike path parallel to the Arizona Canal. It cuts across the north of the city, going under most intersections by tunnel.
This is the entrance to the Tonto National Forest in Arizona. It's only fair that he should be given his own forest after all of the abuse he took from the Lone Ranger.
Here are three road pictures from Arizona - the Gonzalez Pass, the Queen Creek gorge, and an empty road near Safford. Arizona has many wide open vistas, perfect for Ansel Adams-type photos.
This could be the lowest spot in the US to cross the Continental Divide. I decided to take I-10 over the Divide rather than cycle up into the hills (8800 feet) on smaller state routes. It was blowing up a storm when I stopped to 'pose' for this picture.
The sign says 'Prison facilities in this area. Please do not pick up hitch-hikers". That gives you a great sense of security, doesn't it?
La Mesilla, NM has been around since the 1500's. This building off of the main square figures prominantly in La Mesilla's history. The sign on the wall reads "This building, which dates from 1850, once housed the Capitol of Arizona and New Mexico. Later it was the Courthouse in which Billy The Kid was tried and sentanced to hang." It is now Billy The Kid Gift Shop. Something about that seems tacky.
