Once Around on a Bicycle

Pictures from North & South Carolina

Talmadge Bridge

The tall bridge in the background is the Talmadge Bridge, connecting Savannah, Georgia with an unnamed swamp in South Carolina. Surprisingly, it carries a fair amount of traffic. Bicycles are not permitted on the bridge. And that's all I have to say about that.

Hardeeville Elephants - Rear View Hardeeville Elephants - Front View

What's funnier than a life-size replica of an elephant's posterior? Two life-size replicas of elephant posteriors, of course. If that weren't funny enough, the folks in Hardeeville, South Carolina made one of their fake elephants pink. The sign behind the elephants is advertising explosive souvenirs. Insert your own punch line here.

Swtzerland, SC The Hills of South Carolina

In one of the flattest sections of South Carolina I passed through the town of Switzerland. ??? Further down the road I came across the 'hills' of South Carolina. This sign reminded me of the old joke: "Could I speak with Mr. Hill please?" "I'm sorry. Mr. Hill is on vacation." "Then, is Mr. Hill available?" "No. Mr. Hill is in a meeting." "Well, is Mr. Hill there?" "Speaking."

Charleston Church

I think that this is Charleston's Catholic Cathedral, but I'm not sure. I also don't remember its name. I was in a real hurry to get through Charleston. I just posted this picture because I like it.

Waiting Out a Thunderstorm

"Any port in a storm" becomes "Any awning in a storm" when you're on a bike. Here I am waiting out a thunderstorm near Georgetown, SC. I waited here, three miles from my hotel, for 90 minutes Then I gave up and cycled out into the rain and lightening. I was soaked to the bone when I sloshed into the Hampton Inns lobby.

Myrtle Beach Limo

A good touring bike has a long wheelbase to absorb the bumps in the road. Here's another vehicle in Myrtle Beach with a long wheelbase. I don't know how much it's worth, but I do know that the jacuzzi isn't working. Maybe somebody with a really long driveway can purchase it at a bargain price.

Camp Lejeune Traffic Sign

Here's a sign that you don't see often. This picture was taken in Camp Lejeune, NC. Tanks always get the right of way here.

The Center of US. History

At this site in Swansboro, NC four important events in U.S. history occured. You can tell because the state went to the expense of putting up four historical markers less than 20 yards apart near the bridge.

Ocracoke Campground Ocracoke Campground

On the 4th of July I was forced to camp out at Ocracoke Village on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. All of the motels nearby were fully booked. This site cost me $31. I posed for one picture as if I was working on my Pocket PC, rather than swatting away mosquitoes.

Koa Kabin

The next night I also stayed at a campground. This time I was in a KOA in Rodanthe, and I got one of their Kabins. This cost me $64. For that kind of money running water might have been nice.

Kill Devil Hills Kill Devil Hills Kill Devil Hills

Here are some pictures taken at the Wright Brothers Memorial Park in Kill Devil Hills, NC. Kitty Hawk is just up the road. There was a kite flying competition on the day that I passed through.
